Marvin Otto Herzog was born August 9, 1932, on a farm in Frankenmuth, Michigan, to Otto and Clara Brenner Herzog.

Music played an important role in the Herzog home. The family, together with their friends, enjoyed many evenings singing the old German songs handed down through the generations. Most Saturday nights, the Herzog family would be in the kitchen, listening to the radio tuned to the Grand Ole Opry, live from Nashville, Tennessee, and on Sunday mornings after church, they tuned into WFDF radio station in Flint, Michigan, for the Polka Show. From those early beginnings, the old German songs from his father, the country music from the Grand Ole Opry, and the polkas and waltzes from WFDF came the style of music that is uniquely "Marv Herzog."

One of the last record on this Detroit label, owned by George Braxton



Detroit, Michigan, 1957. Don Davenport, a member of the Romeos, a local vocal group, knew a guy named George Braxton, who owned a real estate agency and was also a director of a local magazine for kids, called Teen Life. Don convinced him to record them. As a result, George Braxton started the Fox label

Braxton was a guy, says Don, who "wanted to get into the business. He thought he could sing (and even attempted to cut a record on Brax called 'Hey Ellen'). George also liked getting into anything where he thought there was money."

Seeking more involvement, Don even drew the picture of the fox for the Fox label. The company was called "Fox" because, says Don, "George always made jokes about being sly as a fox. So he came up with the name, and I drew the label pic." The label was headquartered at 15836 Plymouth Road in Detroit, which just happened to be the address of the real estate agency.

Gary has had several recordings cut. Two were out of the Detroit area, one on Gary's own" Big Sky" Label, which charted for several weeks, in Detroit - Port Huron Michigan area. He had another single out of Memphis, Tennessee, on Camaro Records, affiliated with RCA, which charted in the New Brunswick, Canada area. He also had a record album out of Boise, Idaho, and Nashville, Tennessee, on American Heritage, the same label as Boxcar Willie, which featured Classic Country Western, and old time fiddle music., with sales in several states, Canada and England.

Inasmuch as there can only be one Queen - it's tough to choose, and in any case very much a matter of taste." was the answer.

Hey, they forgot to mention Laurel Mae Martin. Her record was once described by a puzzled e-bay seller as "Detroit Hillbilly Soul Motown Northern Funk". Six words, only one accurate : Detroit.

These two sides are something you've never heard before. Truly amazing!

Leonard McDonald was probably the leader of this Detroit, Michigan soul/disco group from the late seventies. Members may have included Mose R. Davis, Sherman Edwards, Michael McConnell and Harry Gatens Bowens Jr.

Besides Rite account #240 found in dead wax is indeed the number allocated to National Recording Corp. (NRC).

In the September 14, 1959 issue of Billboard, Boots Woodall announced the set up of the NRC's own pressing plant equipped with ten presses imported from Italy. Apparently, two months later, the machines were not yet working. (or already out of order?).

Was Ivan Bloch related to Sonny Bloch who recorded with the Coralairs on NRC? Probably so me think.

There was a '63 Decca recording by Ivan Block. Was he the same singer?

"Paper Tiger" was compiled on the Collector CD "More Girls Real Gone" in 2003.

"Ed McCoy started the label from an office on Livernois near Fenkell in Detroit. Later he purchased the building on Warren Ave.(between Livernois and Wyoming) it was a old movie theatre but the seats had been removed, the stage was still there and he put his 2 track recording equipment up on the stage area, he had a couple dozen of these cheap $5. plastic mikes hanging every where from the ceiling, so I guess you just start playing or singing any where you wanted and he'd find you on one of those mikes ..."
