Betty Van on Clay

Betty Van

Clay Recording Co.
P.O. Box 1683
Cahokia, Illinois

21723 - Lovin’
21724 - Picking Up The Pieces Of My Heart
(Betty Van, Country Stream BMI)

1968

Country record on a Cahokia, Illinois label located very closely to East St. Louis (and for that matter, where was located the Country Stream publishing company).

According to Wikipedia, "Cahokia is home to Galactic Imperial Garbage Processing, a waste production and distribution facility."

A waste producer myself (with moderate output however, I can assure you), I didn't think until now to find myself a pseudonym.

Vocal by R. Smith and the Caveman Band

Caveman

CP- 6621 ~ These Old Hills
(Williams-Carlson-Baxter)

CP- 6622 ~ White Rose Gal
(wr Ned Williams)

1961

My guess is that R. Smith is Roger Smith whose name popped up on various labels such as Claudra, Red Bird, AFS (57), Air (59-60), Star-X and Jerome (61). All these recordings, like this release on Caveman, are song-poem recordings.

Some are attempts to rock and roll, but the results are always contrived, not preventing their inclusion on RnR compilation. See Rockin' Country Style.

Was he also the vocalist doing "Because Of You" on the budget label Prom Hit backed by the Scott Brady (a.k.a. Enoch Light) and his Orchestra in the mid-fifties? Was he recording as vocalist of a big band before WW II? Probably.

The Caveman label was located in Wolf Lake, Illinois. See ASPMA.

John B. Moore and Associates

Jerome 7361 EP

12821 - Somewhere a Heart is Calling / Only a Rose From Heaven
12822 - A Throne for Love / When it's Blossom Time in Old Caroline

WNC JEWELER-COMPOSER GAINS NATIONAL ACCLAIM

« When It’s Blossom time in Old Caroline » written and published by John B. Moore, Murphy composer and poet, is the theme song of a travel-talk on colorful Western North Carolina, which is now being shown throughout the nation.

The song, which is a favorite of Jimmie Livingston and his orchestra, is at present being considered for inclusion on a famous radio program, according to correspondence Mr. Moore has had with the sponsor.
...
Mr. Moore is a native of Cherokee County and received his education in North Carolina schools. He has been writing music and poetry for several years. He is a jeweler by trade being engaged in the business in Murphy, North Carolina

Jim Akins

Marlo 1530

OM 11359 - Walkin’ The Road Of Love
(sample)

OM 11360 - Answer From Heaven

James David Akins, better known as "Jim Akins," the youngest of three children was born January 6th 1944 in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. Read more Here.

His second release (of four) on Marlo Records, recorded in Memphis in the Fernwood studio with "The Bill Black Combo" and brass section arranged by Bill Justis. This record got him appearances on Russ Carter's "St. Louis Hop," at KSD-TV St. Louis Missouri and George Kline's "Dance Party," WHBQ-TV in Memphis Tennessee.

Jim Akins, often Presley-ish sounding, has been much overlooked by the music compilers. His only compiled track, according to Rockin' Country Style, is "Floating On A Cloud" which was issued in 1980 on a LP titled "The Other Kings" by Revival Records, OakPark Illinois.

(Combs-Reno, Golden Voice, BMI)

17772 - Susie
(Reno-Combs)

Rite account # 1614.

1966 Peoria, Illinois garage/teen.

Johnny Reno has signed his name on the b-side. Another group of the same name and also from Illinois recorded on Orlyn Records. Don't think that is the same band.

Carl Dean (real name Carl Dean Hoppe) learned to play guitar from his father at a very early age but preferred the piano. In the late fifties he performed several shows with Jerry Lee Lewis.

In the early sixties the Donna and Russell label (#508 in the Atlanta, Georgia NRC custom series) paired two Carl Dean self-penned songs : "Wait Till The Sun Comes Down" and "I'll Pack My Things And Go".
